Carpentry and Framing
Conventional house walls have an inner wooden framework. This framework may, or may not, support part of the house, but it does support exterior and interior wall coverings, and your windows and doors. Your house framing also provides cavities for electrical wiring, plumbing, ductwork, and insulation.
FRAMING 101
Although most walls we frame are with two-by-four wall studs, two-by-six studs are used to provide more strength and larger cavities in some areas of your home. Exterior walls, for example, may be framed with two-by-sixes to allow more room for insulation. Some bathroom walls are also framed with two-by-sixes to allow plenty of space for large pipes. Not all houses are framed with wooden wall studs, however. Some newer homes are built with metal studs, a practice adopted from commercial construction methods.
Wall Framing a Multi-Story Home
Multi-story houses are built one level at a time. Each floor provides a platform for the next series of framing and walls. Most contemporary houses are built using the platform construction method of house framing, and special wall framing considerations are necessary to ensure that any multi-story structure is framed safely and is up to code.
Wall Framing Non-Bearing Walls
Non-bearing walls may be perpendicular or parallel to joists or rafters. They often may be identified from under the house, because they’re not supported by a foundation wall or beam. Because they don’t support loads, they usually can be removed without compromising a structure’s strength, making them ideal for renovations or remodels. Load-bearing walls include exterior walls that carry ceiling, roof, or upper floor loads to the foundation and internal walls that support joists at a midspan. A joist is any of a set of parallel beams set from wall to wall to support the boards of a ceiling or floor.
WALL FRAMING ALTERATIONS
If you are planning structural changes, such as removing walls, or if you are planning a complex building design, you should hire our architect and structural engineer to evaluate your house framing. Our architect will help you detail exactly what you want, draw up plans and material specifications, and may provide oversight for your project while it’s in progress. Hiring an architect can help eliminate confusion, and could save you a lot of time and money in the end. Our architects will typically charge an hourly rate or flat fee, so be sure to get an estimate of the total cost to draw up plans before you start. And if you’re planning any home remodels or renovations, you can talk to our experienced framer about what needs to be done for a common home addition. Wall framing is one aspect of home construction that must be done correctly to ensure the integrity of your home.
Cabinetry Installation and Repair
LOOKING FOR AN EASY, INEXPENSIVE WAY TO REVIVE YOUR KITCHEN?
Have us apply a fresh coat of paint or a bold new stain on your kitchen cabinets. Add some new hardware and you’ll feel like you have a brand new kitchen. Often the cost of restoring the many old doors and casings in an older home is cost prohibitive and many homeowners settle for just giving the woodwork a clean, fresh look while leaving the bumps and brush marks in the surface.
A: It’s a good idea to use the best paint available if your budget allows, but even less expensive paints won’t peel. When applying paint with a brush, we use a good oil base enamel; it sticks much better than latex (water base) paints and is more beautifying to any piece of wood. If spraying the paint, latex enamel can look as good as oil base paint, if applied with skill. However, if applying water base paint to a previously lacquered or varnished surface, always use a first coat of shellac or oil base primer. It will stick well to the old surface and provide a strong foundation for the top coat of water base paint. Ultimately we be happy to measure your kitchen or bathroom with our many selections of provide samples to you for new cabinets installation with a desired countertop selected in either a stone like Quartz stone or Laminate countertop. Typical time for cabinetry fabrication is 3-6 weeks and 1-2 days for installation.
Decks and Patio: Build, Replace, or Repair
Composite decking is a decking material that is composed of several different recycled materials, though mainly hard plastic and wood. This type of product came about to extinguish the problems of typical wood decking. Wood fades, molds, cracks, splinters, and needs to be treated and sealed regularly for the deck to maintain its original look and feel. When composite decking materials came on the scene less than a decade ago, it curbed many of the problems typically associated with wood decks.
THE DECKING ADVANTAGE
This type of decking is a little more expensive up front than wood materials usually. Where you save money is that you won’t have to treat a composite deck or porch, it won’t crack or splinter (causing you to have to replace individual boards), and this material has exact, uniform coloring. While a wood porch or deck might be cheaper to build, it will continually cost the homeowner more money each season in maintenance and repairs. With our composites, a little washing every now and again it all it needs.
COMPOSITE DECKING BRANDS
There are as many as 10 brands of composite decking materials on today’s market. Some brands are best used for oceanside decks, as they are more resistant to the salt in the air; some are the most solid; some offer more colors; some have more unique railing systems. The choice is yours as to which brand fits your exact needs simply ask our contractor for more info and details.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Composite decking companies are making a product that will save you money by eliminating maintenance, repairs, and finishes, while providing the same strength durability as wood decking. Plus this is great for the environment. No mater what your preferences, this product can answer the call.
Trim or Decorative Crown Molding
OPTIONS FOR INSTALLING FLOOR TRIM
You have three basic options for floor trim installation with your vinyl floor. You can have us remove and reinstall your current floor trim. This is naturally the cheapest option. You can have us install new floor trim to maximize the beauty of your new vinyl flooring. Or you can choose to install quarter-round trim, which may last longer than reusing your old trim, but shouldn’t cost as much as a new full trim installation. Each homeowner may have different needs and preferences for the area where the flooring is being installed. Talk to our contractor about the price difference for each option and what each trim has to offer your home.
DECORATIVE TRIM INSTALLATION
The primary reason for installing floor trim is often the function of holding a flooring installation in place, but that doesn’t mean decorative trim won’t add a nice touch to your floor and walls. Floor trim comes in any number of colors or textures, including a nearly limitless number of wood finishes. Finding the right trim can act as an aesthetic transition from your vinyl flooring to your wall covering. Since you may need to replace the trim anyway, this is the perfect time to consider installing wainscoting. Hardwood floors can be prohibitively expensive for some homeowners. If this is the case, a new vinyl floor with decorative wood paneling can provide a new floor and a similar elegance to hardwood flooring for significantly less cost.
Vinyl floor installation and trim installation are often companion projects. Before you install vinyl flooring, you should remove the existing trim. This will prevent you from harming the trim during the installation. Installing floor trim after you’ve laid the vinyl will help keep it in place.
